Muro Scents Co mission is to explore the history and culture of fragrance from its often-forgotten ancient origins to the modern-day, and this product bridges fragrance history from the ancient Egyptians via the Romans, middle ages and today's pandemic. The hand sanitiser is scented with natural thyme, which has been used throughout history as a natural antiseptic. The hand sanitiser contains oil of thyme, the essential oil of common thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and contains thymol.
Thymol, the most prevalent terpene in thyme oil, has antimicrobial properties which the Ancient Egyptians were first to discover and used thyme in embalming. The ancient Greeks used it in their baths and burnt it as incense in their temples, believing it was a source of courage. The spread of thyme throughout Europe was due to the Romans, as they used it to purify their rooms and to "give an aromatic flavour to cheese and liqueurs". In the European Middle Ages, the herb was placed beneath pillows to aid sleep and ward off nightmares. In this period, women also often gave knights gifts that included thyme leaves, as it was believed to bring courage to the bearer. "At Muro Scents, we want to enhance people’s surroundings with an array of natural fragrances. As the pandemic took place we looked back at the history of fragrance to see how our ancestors had used various natural substances and scents in ancient medicine, we did our research and took our inspiration from the past to create a new product which we believe will give us the courage to see us through the present." Muro Scents. The Muro Thyme scented hand sanitiser comes in a 500ml dispenser and is available via the web-shop here.
