Rum Tasting With Zacapa at Cane Rum Society

Little did we know about rum but after visiting the newly opened restaurant Cane Rum Society we knew a whole lot more. This was our experience of our first rum tasting with Zacapa.

Cane Rum Society was founded by private rum collector Niklas Blomquist and Duane Shepherd with the focus of being a restaurant bringing you the authentic flavor of carribean culture. It is a combination of tasty cuisines, a rich atmosphere and the best rum you can find. The restaurant and its library together, contains a collection of 1200+ types of the very most vintage and super-premium rum. It has also become the well renowned rum icon Zacapas very first “brand home”, including a sortiment of its very best bottles. Which brings us to the main subject, more specifically, beverage.

Zacapa is what they call, a rum for everyone. No matter the experience or prior relation you have with rum, Zacapa is the one to bring you with some serious and unique flavors. The  history behind is quite interesting. The Zacapa you may or think about holding in your hand as you read this, all originates from the highlands of Quetzaltenango, 2300 meters above sea level, in Guatemala. There, depending on what flavor and richness you desire, it goes through various processes which finally leads to the fine bottle in front of you.

The ones we had the pleasure tasting were Zacapa 23, Zacapa edición negra and Zacapa XO. Zacapa 23 is a blend of rums, aged 6 to 23 years, creating a sweet notes of apricot  & vanilla and a finish of savoury oak, nutmeg and coffee. The sweeter notes pair perfectly with a lighter chocolate treat. Zacapa edición negra With an extra ageing stage, negra had a smokier character than the zacapa 23 with revealing woody, spicy and dense fruit notes, which made it perfect to be enjoyed with a powerful dark chocolate. Zacapa XO Aged in french oak barrels that previously held cognac, the XO has tones of sweet caramel and light citrus, along with deeper notes of dark cherry chocolate, which combined with a 50-60 % cocoa chocolate gave a phenomenal taste

Which one was the better? They all were very rich in flavor over all, for us, the XO and edición negra were the most interesting and complex flavors, although we must admit it was a close call to being a draw with the others. Our visit to Cane Rum Society taught us a good lesson about rum, not only about the drink itself, but the phenomenal and complex flavors you get from trying its various flavors combined with things like cheese, chocolate or fruit. Cane rum society brings you far away from the dark cold autumn evenings in Stockholm to the very vibrant carribean culture. All in all it makes you appreciate the Zacapa rum all much more.
